Cycling the Accursed Mountains of Albania

This tour is for active people who who like to explore the mysteries of the accursed mountains of Albania on a scenic cycle/trekking holiday. On this trip, we will cycle along rural villages, learn about traditional cultures and hike through some of the most spectacular alpine landscapes in the country 

Itinerary

Cycling the Accursed Mountains of Albania

Day 1: Explore Shkoder
We will meet at 09:00 o'clock in the morning in central Tirana. From there, we will drive directly to Shkoder, Northern Albania's oldest city. Here we will have lunch and visit the ruins of the Rozafa Castle to enjoy fabulous views of Shkoder, the lake and the Albania Alps.

Dinner: Restaurant
Overnight: Hotel in Shkodra

Transfer: Tirana Airport- Shkodra,100km/1hr 30min.


Day 2: Cycle from Shkodra to Boge
Today we will leave the agricultural countryside of the Shkoder region behind us and climb steadily through a landscape of barren rock interspersed with wildflowers on the mountainside. After a picnic lunch with stunning panoramas, we will climb into the heart of the Radohima Peaks until we reach the valley of Boge, our stopping point for today.

Day 3: Cycle from Boge to Theth
This morning we start ascending along a meandering path that zigzags across the rocky terrain, which leads us to the pass that we will reach in the late morning. The views from up here are breathtaking; we will see the Thethi Valley surrounded by the soaring peaks of the 'Bjeshket e Naumna' (Accursed Mountains).
In the afternoon we will reach the village of Thethi. We will explore the village by foot and pay a visit to the church and the Kulla e Ngujimit, an old 'lock-in tower' that dates back to a time when blood feuds blighted the Albanian highlands. We will also head past a waterfall and into the Grunasi Canyon where we pass by terraces dating back to the bronze age, after which we turn back to our guesthouse to enjoy a good meal.

Day 4: Hike from Theth to Valbona
Today we will hike through the most beautiful valleys in the Albanian Alps – the Theth valley and the Valbona valley. We will leave from Theth early in the morning and start climbing to the pass of Valbona (1960m), after which we will descend into the Valbona Valley where we stay overnight in a local farmhouse in Rragam.

Hiking distance: 5 - 7 hours walking.


Day 5: Cycle from Valbona to Bajram Curri
Today we will have a comfortable and relaxing ride. We will descent gradually from 900m to about 350m while enjoying our spectacular surroundings.

Cycling distance: 25km


Day 6 : Cycle from Bajram Curri to Lezhe, Koman ferry ride
Early in the morning, we will drive from Barjam Curri to the dock, where we will take the ferry through the spectacular fjord-like canyon of Lake Koman. After we arrive in Koman we will get back on the bikes and cycle along the Vau i Dejes lake until we reach Lezhe.

Day 7: Kruja and Tirana
On this last day of the tour we will drive to Kruja, an important historic town. Here you will have some free time to explore the citadel of Albania's national hero Skanderbeg and to wander around the bazaar, after which we will drive to Tirana.

Day 8: Departure
Depending on the departure time of your flight you will have some time to walk through the center of Tirana and visit the National Historical Museum before we drive to the airport.

Essential Info

Cycling the Accursed Mountains of Albania

Participant guidelines
These tours can be physically challenging, and demand the you to be in good physical shape. The roads are not always in the best of conditions and may contain some big ascents and descents.
Preliminary cycling experience is an advantage, but not necessary for those who are in good shape. You must remember that you will bike with a group of people, partially in city traffic, so you will be moving in single file formation and proceeding quite slowly in the pedestrian area. Also, you must remember that it's always better to stop when youy are not sure how to interpret the signs or moves of other vehicles on the street.

What to bring:
Breathable light weight waterproof gear (gore-tex, sympatex, etc), fleece/wool pullovers/wind-stopper jackets and gloves, small back-pack with rain coverage, cap, sun-block, mosquito repellent, head-lamp, water bottle, sun glasses/block.

Land only
The “OA” tours are Land Only; the prices do not include your flight, nor transport to and from the airport to hotel. You must make your own way to the starting point of every tour. Are Airport transfers included in the tour?
Our set departure tours do not include the airport transfers, if you wish to book an airport transfer,
please mention this at your booking form. The price from the airport to Tirana is 30 euro (max 3
pax).

With whom will I share my room?/
Our set departure tours are based on twin sharing rooms. We will make sure that you will only
share your room with a person of the same sex. In case you want to share your room with a specific
persons you know, please let us know at booking.

Can I bring my own bike?
You can either bring your own bike, or rent a bike from us.

What is the cost for a rental bike?
A rental bike cost 15 euro's per day

Does this tour has a guaranteed departure?
For the cycling tour Accursed mountains we need a min number of 7 participants to guarantee a
departure. You can check our departure dates and see what departures are guaranteed or contact
us for further information. 48 hours prior to departure we will let you know if there are enough
participants to run a tour, in case there are not enough participants you can either choose to cancel
or pay a small group supplement.

What is the beginning time of the tour?
09:00 o'clock in the morning we will meet in central Tirana

Can I bring my kids along?
Unfortunately we do not have small bikes and therefore children need to be big enough for an adult
bike. The min age for set departure tours is 18.

How will the luggage be transported?
This tour has a support vehicle to carry the luggage and, when needed, up to 4 bikes and riders.
